Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)
The SAT is a college admittance exam that is accepted by most schools in the United States. There are two types of SATs: SAT Reasoning Test and SAT Subject Tests. Most universities require the SAT Reasoning Test; only few require that students sit for a specific subject test.

The SAT Reasoning Test is administered seven times per year in the United States and six times per year internationally. It is a test that measures critical thinking proficiency in three areas: reading, mathematics, and writing. Each test is composed of ten separate sections testing one of the three areas that are ten minutes to twenty-five minutes long. The first section of the test is always a twenty-five-minute essay section, and the last section of the test is a ten-minute writing section.

The reading sections are composed of two basic question types: sentence completion questions and passage-based reading questions. Sentence completion questions ask that you logically finish a sentence based on the surrounding text and vocabulary. The passage-based questions can ask you either to define the meaning of a word as it was used in the passage, to identify the logical structure or flaws in the passage, and to measure your understanding of pertinent information in the passage.

The mathematics portion of the test contains questions that are multiple-choice and ten questions that have student-produced answers. The SAT focuses on material that has been learned through the third year in high school. In other words, it focuses on algebra, geometry, and probability.

Finally, the writing portion of the test is composed of a written essay (the essay is the first section of the test) and a multiple-choice section. For the essay section, you will write an essay on a selected topic and support an argument based on your own experiences and observations. The multiple choice section has you identify problems with grammar and usage in sentences.

The SAT Subject Tests are one-hour long and multiple choices. They are based on general high school curricula, but the test questions do not vary significantly from year to year. If you find a test preparation book, you should be able to do fairly well on the SAT Subject Tests.

The best way to prepare for the SAT is to practice with as many real test questions as you can under real testing conditions. There are several SAT test preparation courses that are available, but these tend to by quite expensive. If you are committed to studying and will be consistent, you can generally earn the same advantage by purchasing a book of real SAT questions and studying for a consistent amount of time every day two months prior to the test. Try to take two or three practice tests under real testing conditions. Doing this will help you focus on test day: you will know how long you will have to sit and concentrate. You will practice focusing for extended periods of time so that when you get to test day, you will know exactly what you are doing.
